Linear Nonthreshold Model

What is the issue?

The linear nonthreshold (LNT) model is a key tool of junk scientists. The LNT model assumes that, if a high exposure to something increases cancer risk, then (1) there is no "safe" or "threshold" exposure below which there is no cancer risk (i.e., any exposure increases cancer risk) and (2) cancer risk increases linearly with exposure. The LNT model is the basis for many regulatory programs, especially in the areas of radiation and manmade chemicals. There is no scientific basis for using the LNT model. The LNT is favored by regulators and their contractors who would be out of jobs without the LNT model.

Who is doing what?

On June 27, 1999, there will be a meeting of the National Research Council committee responsible for the project "Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR VII-phase2).

The case for using the LNT model has been repeatedly published by many of the members of this committee. Nearly all these committee members have been living off the use of the LNT model by regulatory agencies. Many members have connections with Nuclear Regulatory Commission, National Cancer Institute and/or Environmental Protection Agency. Six members have served with the National Council on Radiological Protection, 5 with Radiation Effects Research Foundation, 4 with International Council on Radiological Protection, 1 with the BEIR, and 1 with the National Radiological Protetcion Board (UK). This clique has produced all the previous reports defending the status quo. This is not a group capable of producing the "independent, impartial review" called for by the American Nuclear Society.

If an independent, impartial group cannot be formed, the project should dropped, because the result is pre-ordained and will serve no useful purpose.

What can I do?

Send you comments to Richard Monson (Committee chair), Rick Jostes (NRC staff officer for the committee).

Where can I get more information?

Radiation, Science and Health, Inc.

American Nuclear Society position paper "Health Effects of Low-Level Radiation" (April 1999)
