Mort Lippmann Ties Beavis and Butthead?

BNA's Daily Environment Report (April 11, 1997)

According to Entertainment Weekly, actor-comedian Robin Williams ranks number one among the 50 funniest people. Beavis and Butthead ranked 50th. What about New York University's Mort Lippmann?

On April 10, 1997, the Subcommittee on Health and Environment of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Commerce Oversight and Investigations held a hearing on EPA's proposed air quality standards.

At the hearing, three of four current or former chairmen of EPA's Clean Air Science Advisory Committee testified that they would NOT recommend setting a fine particulate matte standard at the level that has been proposed by EPA. Only the infamous Lippmann testified to the contrary.

Members of the Subcommittee raised the issue of the"secret" data used as the basis of the EPA proposals.

According to the BNA report, Lippmann objected to the implications that EPA was withholding information. He said the agency doesn't have the requested data. The researchers do. Lippmann said it was understandable that the researchers would not want to release this data given the implications of having those who are not experts attempt to interpret it.

BNA quoted good ol' Mort as saying to the Subcommittee

If you were delivered a truckload of raw data, you wouldn't know what to do with it. It's a canard to say the investigators have been uncooperative.

NEWS BULLETIN TO DR. MORTON LIPPMANN: Hey Mort, Congress would know what to do with the data. Congress would give it to scientists for analysis. Or is that what Mort's afraid of?

Entertainment Weekly simply must find room for Lippmann on its list of funny people. How about tied with Beavis and Butthead?
