More Helter Swelter

Vice President Gore criticized the Republican position on global-warming legislation, and he implied that Republicans do not care by saying dramatically: "There are people sweltering out there," in reference to the current heat wave [" 'People Are Sweltering,' " Says Gore, Tying Record Heat to Global Warming" news story, July 15].

Mr. Gore's comment needs criticism on several points. First, he confuses the long-term concept of climate with the short-term concept of weather. Second, his previous stances indicate that he does know the difference, so his comment amounts to insincere demagoguery. Third, his comments are clearly an appeal for political support using a false-cause argument; people will be sweltering out there in spite of any legislation.

Although the citizenry is accustomed to the association of political speeches and hot air, Mr. Gore makes the connection too literally.
