But what Ms. Stahl is unlikely to tell her television audience, when the 60 Minutes segment finally airs this fall, is that the two hand-in-glove "producers" of her segment are Greenpeace and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
At the center of tomorrow's day-long dog-and-pony show is Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan 14th District) and a delegation of black Democrats. According to Conyers' Congressional aide Catherine Baer, Conyers' attorney Samara Ryder (not his press secretary, interestingly) has been heavily involved in planning tomorrow's event with Greenpeace. Ryder, said Baer, is the contact person and can be reached at (202) 225-6504. Conyers' office is at (202) 225-5126.
Baer said Greenpeace is coordinating the CBS crew, directing where they'll be going, who they'll be talking to. The kick-off is a press briefing Friday morning at the New Orleans offices of the Earth Justice Legal Defense Fund. The day winds up with an "open" town meeting, which from the event schedule looks to be heavily salted with EPA officials and activists, including representatives from the Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund, Louisiana Environmental Action Network, and Greenpeace itself. Baer indicated Greenpeace was prepping residents for town meeting. Damu Smith is the Greenpeace point man. Dwight Mims is the Greenpeace media coordinator at (202) 319-2436.
Don't expect to see any balance of opinion from "60 Minutes." Despite the involvement of outside agitators and grandstanding politicians, the producers are focusing on this as a local event. "60 Minutes" is aiming for good theater, and if Green activists package it for them, so much the better.
