National Public Radio tonight gave two good reasons why Al Gore is wrong about global warming. The first was a rehash of the Nature study about correcting the satellite temperature data for changes in altitude. As Patrick Michaels of the Cato Institute told NPR, who cares? At best the adjusted data continue to bear out the skeptics claims -- a very slight warming of around 1 degree centigrade or so over the next century. For this Al Gore wants to spend billions of dollars?
But the real kicker was the story NPR chose to run directly after the global warming story. As you may have heard, U.S. farmers are losing their shirts because of extremely low prices caused by record and near record crops. Soy beans production is expected to set a new record this year. Other crops will approach their all time highs. And this boom isn't restricted to the United States -- according to Business Week, China has become a net exporter of wheat; Latin and South American countries are now competing head to head with American farmers. Could it be, as the skeptics have claimed, that moderate warming will be a net benefit to humanity? Bet you won't see Al Gore talk about that in his next speech.
