I am appalled by the continued ignorance and intentional misleading of the public by the advocates of the ill-conceived Kyoto Treaty (editorial, Aug. 18).
There isn't a single shred of proof of the existence, or future likelihood, of global warming due to human activities. Not a single one.
The surface temperature record, which is a primary reference of global warming advocates, is seriously flawed, with numerous factors creating an artificial upward "creep" in the record. The surface record is not corroborated by balloon measurements as is the satellite record. In fact, it diverges from both the balloon and satellite records.
The damage to the U.S. economy ($250 billion to $450 billion annually in lost GDP by most estimates), the jobs lost (1 to 3 million by most estimates), the subsequent increased mortality rates and declining general health of the population (due to the "health-wealth" effect), is utterly absurd and completely unacceptable.
The majority of the IPCC "scientists" frequently referred to by Kyoto advocates 1) didn't voluntarily sign-off on the report, and 2) aren't climate scientists. Reportedly just one climatologist was in attendance.
(Some) 17,000 scientists, including the world's foremost authorities on global warming issues, and the scientists who created the satellites, the world's most accurate instruments for measuring average global temperature, petitioned Congress opposing the unfounded global warming hysteria. Unlike the Kyoto advocates, most of these scientists hold advanced degrees, many in climate-related fields.
Legislation pursuant to Kyoto would hurt America and therefore the world economy. Considering that such legislation would be based on exactly zero proof that such a threat due to human activities even exists, the very notion of supporting such legislation is improper.Randy Oliver
