    A University of
Arizona professor of microbiology has been fired for allegedly publishing misleading research,
including a study that found vitamin E had positive effects on aging.
University President Peter Likins said he decided to accept recommendations of
the university's Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure to
end Dr. Marguerite Kay's employment.
"I am not guilty of scientific misconduct," Kay said Friday.
"I am confident that I am going to be exonerated at the national level."
Kay is a physician who has worked in the university's department of
microbiology and immunology for eight years. She is known for her research
on aging.
The committee found that Kay had manipulated and misrepresented findings that
were published in professional journals, including the vitamin E study. Its
members concluded that her papers lacked scientific rigor and were careless,
and that she had mismanaged her lab.
