Wheaton, Ill., near ChicagoFACS programs for journalists provide reporters with teaching from some of the nation's top academic experts. A typical FACS conference will also include presentations from advocates of varying viewpoints and from distinguished journalists who have unique experience with the topic at hand.
The November conference is no different.
Our lead faculty are:
1) Stephen B. Presser, Northwestern University School of Law
2) Leon Gordis, M.D., Johns Hopkins School of Public HealthThe role of lead faculty is to provide journalists with the analytical tools they need -- free from any point of view -- to sort through and evaluate conflicting claims on matters of important public policy.
At the November FACS conference, speakers representing various viewpoints are:
3) Stanton A. Glantz, Ph.D., UC San Francisco Medical School
4) Allen D. Roses, M.D., Glaxo Wellcome
5) Paul V. Gerlach, SEC Enforcement Division
6) Maryann Napoli, Center for Medical Consumers
7) Gary Black, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.And the journalist who will speak from an "in the trenches" point of view will be
8) Gina Kolata, The New York Times
Your comments were directed specifically at speaker 3), Dr. Stanton Glantz who will participate in a section of our program in which a case study is presented. Journalists will also hear from 7) Gary Black, a leading Wall Street tobacco industry analyst. Black's views will be quite different from those of Stanton Glantz.
FACS routinely presents such case studies contrasting the viewpoints of advocates. Such presentations are separate from academic teaching at the program.
The memo to journalists, which you saw, was not clear about the distinctions among participants, and we apologize. Thank you for sharing your concerns with us.
