Marimont's challenge to Siegel

Dear Dr. Siegel,

Your article in ANR accusing me of scientific corruption, and being bought by the tobacco industry is totally without foundation. Please produce the articles proving my ties to the tobacco industry. You say "Ms. Marimont is with the National Smokers Alliance" I am a member, and so are millions of other Americans fighting for fairness to smokers. You are obviously trying to persuade your readers that I derived financial gain from this organization.

Is this anything but a malicious attempt to impugn my integrity, which has been demonstrated in a scientific career begun in 1942 at the National Bureau of Standards, (now NIST), and continuing from 1960 to 1979 at the National Institutes of Health, and since retirement in 1979, research and publication on public policy issues such as treatment of chronic pain, and since 1992, the war on smoking?

My coauthor Robert A. Levy has forwarded to me his correspondence with you.

Although I am very tempted to take legal action, I will accept the conditions agreed upon by Professor Levy and you, provided that:

  1. MY name be included along with his in the retraction and apology.
  2. That in addition a statement be included as follows: "Ms. Marimont has engaged in a career in science at NIST and NIH for 37 years, and there is no reason to believe that her writings on smoking or any other issues were guided by anything but her best scientific judgment and professional integrity."

Sincerely yours,
Rosalind B. Marimont
