ORD/RTP Employees,
A re-print of the following Headquarters Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Division memorandum is submitted for your information / action:
Aug 13, 1999
MEMORANDUM
Subject: Cellular Phone Alert
From:Howard Wilson, Chief SHEMD/TSEB
To: SHEMP Managers
We recommend that you take appropriate action to notify employees that cellular telephones should not be used near flammable, or combustible liquids. Mobile phone manufacturers, Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia, print cautions in their user handbooks that warn against the use of mobile phones in "gas stations, fuels storage sites, and chemical factories". Exxon has begun placing "warning stickers" at its gasoline stations urging users not to use their cellular phones on the premises.
While we are unaware of an actual incident where personal injury or property damage has occurred, we feel that it would be prudent for EPA personnel not to use cellular phones near areas where flammable and/or combustible liquids and chemicals are stored.
Please contact Leo Stein at 202-260-1295, or Tom Oberholtzer at 202-260-6141 if you have any questions regarding this matter.
